Please meet Joseph Rial Yak. Joseph is a South Sudanese refugee who has been living in Kakuma refugee camp since 1999. He originally fled Sudan as a renegade of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) during the country’s second civil war, a conflict which lasted 22 years. Having started a family in Kakuma and been living as a refugee for over a decade, when South Sudan finally gained its independence in 2011 Joseph traveled back home with his family. Days after their arrival in South Sudan’s capitol city, Juba, December of 2013, the country’s current civil war broke out resulting in the slaughter of more than 10,000 human beings. Joseph was separated from his family in the midst of the chaos as he evaded murder and found his way to the UNMISS (United Nations Mission in the Republic of South Sudan) camp where he was reunited with his family. He currently resides in Kenya’s Kakuma refugee camp, 1st district, with his wife and two daughters where he has found work at the local hospital as a medical attendant. Joseph is also a youth director at his neighborhood church. Recently, work at the hospital and around the camp has dwindled for Joseph leaving him without an income. He and his family are now forced to live off the minimal rations of food provided by NGOs in the area. Although much of the day Joseph is desperately trying to provide for his family, he makes time to self educate and hopes to one day further his formal education at a university. Ramble Pictures is currently working to resettle the Yak’s in the United States, but we need your help! If you, a family member or friend have any information regarding the resettlement of international refugees please email us at any of the addresses located on our contact page.
